Battle of the Sexes!

On Monday at the BankSA Sea and Vines Festival, sport stars and media personalities will fight for the title of bottling champions at d’Arenberg.

Bringing the girl power is champion Aussie netballer from Australian Netball Diamonds Natalie Medhurst, GLAM Adelaide guru Kelly Noble and the victorious florist from My Kitchen Rules, Leigh Sexton.

Stepping up to represent the boys are talented musician Jay Hoad, foodie about town and My Kitchen Rules contestant Paul Wood and returning champion from last year, McLaren Vale local Darren Bradley.

Each team is joined by a member of the crowd, chosen on the day.... and it could be you! And don't forget to see the full Jay Hoad Band in performance at the Sea and Vines Festival on both Sunday and Monday. Cheers!

"Sista" Video Clip Launch

The full six piece band will be performing our first show in South Australia since the sold out Gov show this past January. We'll be premiering the video for “Sista” at Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club at 3pm on Sunday August 7th. "Sista" was written whilst touring through Atlantic City, NJ on the East Coast leg of the 2010 North American tour. The song was inspired by a hooker we witnessed fighting with a bum for a place to sleep for the night, but you will have to hear the song and see the video to find out the rest of the story!
"Sista" is track #10 on my new album "Stories For The Soul". Look for the world wide video release at our YouTube channel coming up after the concert.

Freelancing

Here I am filling in on acoustic bass for the fantastic Delmarva Big Band, a traditional 18-piece American Big Band. I think this must be Jim's attempt at keeping me musically honest(!) - plus they really needed a sub and we had a free night from the tour to make it happen. We performed at a quaint and lovely park in the seaside town of Ocean Pines, MD, USA.

Click on the above photo to see more pictures of this show! Besides Jim on trumpet you'll see Dean on the kit - he's also their regular drummer besides being my US touring drummer and percussionist.

USA Tour Interim Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jay Hoad Band USA Tour Arrives in Delaware for August Shows

Jay Hoad and his band will be bringing their brief USA tour to Delaware for three shows during the month of August, beginning with a performance at Dogfish Head in Rehoboth Beach this Saturday night, August 7.

Many Delawareans will recall the summer of 2007 when dreadlocked Australian Jay Hoad first arrived on the local scene performing his unique brand of world music. Fast forward to three years later following repeat tours of the USA, Australia, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and Canada, a successful CD release and the creation of an independent record label, Walkabout Fish Records. The band passed on a 2009 USA tour while Hoad returned to Australia to record his upcoming second CD and further develop his multi-instrument solo show.

Fans attending the Delaware shows will hear the evolution of a gifted songwriter and talented musician as he furthers his sonic palette with new musical creations and an ever enlarging stable of unique instruments. The all original shows will feature selections from Hoad's acclaimed debut CD "Warmth In The White" as well as from his newly completed CD, which is to be released early this autumn.

In addition to the Dogfish Head show the band will be giving a free concert of Hoad's original music at Killens Pond State Park on August 13. On August 27 the band will perform for a unique one-off jazz and blues themed concert at Bethany Blues in Lewes as part of Sydey's Music Revival series.

Interested parties can visit www.jayhoadband.com for more details on the band and the upcoming shows.

For more information about the tour or to schedule an interview with Mr. Hoad, please contact US manager Jim Miller at jmiller@walkaboutfish.com

USA tour update

Having a fantastic time on the East Coast of America and making many new fans whilst performing heaps of solo shows as well as duo and trio shows with some of the U.S. Jay Hoad Band members; especially getting lots of assistance from my U.S. manager, Jim.
We're getting ready for our full band debut extravaganza a bit later this summer - stay tuned!

Press excerpt (edited) that accompanied this photo:
"...Jay is a most unusual musician as he plays a variety of instruments including guitar, lap steel Dulcimer, another lap steel on which his slide technique was superb, percussion, harmonica and an instrument native to his country, the didgeridoo. Keeping all that going while looping background parts and working a foot bass beat is just amazing. I heard him play with two members of his full band that he hooks up with when he’s in the States last Saturday at Davey Jones Locker Room. Jim Miller played trumpet and Dean Haemel played percussion. The full six-piece band includes these three plus full drums, sax and even a belly dancer. Jay will be playing all over the region in the next eight weeks so check jayhoadband.com or this paper for upcoming dates." (-the Coconut Times)

Skanky One Drop

Click below for a slide show of the debut performance of a cool summer reggae project inspired and fronted by Jay:

You can check out Jay and the band every Monday night this summer at the Nalu Surf Bar in Dewey Beach and a few other choice spots.

Update -- about the name (some definitions):
One drop, in Jamaican music, refers to a style of playing the drums where the snare drum and bass drum are only hit on the third beat in 4/4 time. Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on the off-beat, known as the skank. Skanking is a form of rhythmic dance performed to reggae or ska music, characterized by bending forward, raising the knees, and extending the hands.

Birds from Silhouette..

People are always asking me where I recorded the bird noises at the end of the track Silhouette from my last album. Well here it is!

Music Therapy this Sunday.... 2nd Session

This Sunday, June 28, I will be performing my second Music Therapy show at Cafe Komodo.

This week I will be focusing on stimulating the Sacral chakra (second chakra) which is located around the stomach and represented by the colour Orange.

On a Physical side, Orange is known to be beneficial by often helping in cases of anemia, arthritis, diabetes and congestion of any kind. It is often used to break up mucous (great for anyone with a winter cold!) constipation and even calcium deposits.

On a mental and emotional side, lifting depression and bringing self confidence back to those with low self esteem are 2 common attributes of this "freeing" colour. It is also known to inspire mental enlightenment and new ideas without limitation.

Please come to relax and enjoy some of my unique compositions at 3pm this Sunday. Every few weeks following this second performance I will be returning to focus on the other chakras, using their relative colours and live music therapy performances to compliment the mind, body and soul. Please join us at Cafe Komodo as we explore the seven chakras of the human body.

Shack Trip Day 1

This is the first video of a series that I took last week when I went up to my family's shack to record for a few days. I loaded the car up with instruments, headed up the coast and stopped at some of my favorite surf breaks along the way. Please take the time to enjoy some of this beautiful scenery around South Australia with Jay as your tour guide!

You might even see some Kangaroos in this one!

In this one I take you to the place where I wrote the Song "Rat Race" and you can see the incredible effects of the drought for yourself, also check out some tasty seafood!

Stay tuned for day 2!!!

Music Therapy

As part of my solo tour I'll be giving a series of group music therapy performances at the Cafe Komodo here in Adelaide.

Music therapy is a form of complimentary medicine which also includes acupuncture, massage, yoga, aromatherapy and hypnosis as other examples. The goal of complimentary medicine is to balance the whole person - physically, mentally, and emotionally - while conventional medicine does its work. Music Therapy has helped to relieve physical and emotional symptoms, ease the side effects of conventional therapies, and improve quality of life.

In 2007 I began working and composing using my Music Therapy training in conjunction with a Massage Therapist, to create a very unique holistic healing center called “Healing With Harmony". I met with hundreds of clients and wrote individual, unique compositions for all of them.

Come and join me at Café Komodo at 3pm on Sunday afternoons to relax and enjoy some of these compositions and live performances.
